Description

This is an entry for :iconhyrotrioskjan:'s Speculative evolution ContestBased on the Skull crawlers from Kong skull island.

I have not yet seen kong Skull island but it looks amazing. Monotone mike pointed out a bunch of aspects of the skull crawlers that referenced sea turtles. So I decided to follow his advice and make a spec evo skull crawler that stays closer to the in-universe spec.

Skull crawlers appear to have Plastron on their stomachs  as well as large and stiff torsos. Their back also bears a large amount of reference to turtles. Their insides of their mouths resemble that of leatherback sea turtles.

Spec evo version:
[evolutionary history]
The skull crawler is a terrestrial cousin of sea turtles. It originated in the middle Eocene on a small island off the pacific coast. The species ancestors were more privy to cephalopods than their relatives. Their principle prey frequented shallows around the coast of Skull island. The pressure of the turtles predation caused the cephalopods to retreat to shallower waters to escape the turtles. The turtles with better shallow water mobility started to succeed over those with poor mobility.

Eventually the cephalopods started moving to inland water sources (and eventually forests) with the turtles evolutionary in pursuit.

Due to being on land more often the turtles started to gain burrowing adaptations accommodating for the lack of soft sand to bury their eggs.
They also started to take to other forms of prey, though they are still mostly specialized towards cephalopods.

[lifestyle and trivia]
Skull crawlers have a host of adaptations for digging and tend to create massive burrows for their young. Often times these burrows have multiple entrances.  Skull crawlers will often times lay on their stomachs and use their had and arms to stir up dirt. they will often tamp the dirt on the bottom of the tunnel with the end of their tail. The area just above the ground behind the cloaca (under the hind limbs) has rough scales used for turning up dirt.
[trivia]
•They have a 6' long penis which is stored in that flap on the bottom half of their tail. (under their legs.
•They weigh more than Varanus rex.
•They are still adept swimmers
•They are polygamous and gregarious around breeding season
•They still have their hindlegs, though they are mostly vestigial.

Credit where credit's due, the V-rex and kong are based off of :icontomozaurus:'s entrie
